At first glance everything looks familiar: the classic tree/view user interface, clean and clutter free, should get you started immediately. xplorer² will get you in all places you keep your digital wealth, including namespace extensions like FTP, zipfolders, webfolders etc.
xplorerІ has a quick preview panel that regognises most popular text, graphics, media (audio/video) and document formats (office and PDF).
The previewer has a draft mode (tab) that is especially quick extracting text content, and a normal mode that can activate in-place document servers like Microsoft Word using ActiveX technology.
In most cases the draft mode is all you'll need, avoiding the overheads associated with ActiveX.

xplorer² can collaborate with all your text filters meant for windows indexing service, extracting text from proprietary formats like PDFs, DOCs etc. Such filters also enable accurate text searching within files.
You can browse your folders in all usual view modes, including thumbnails and arranged in groups.

In detailed view mode you have a large number of available columns that help you get a better view of your content. xplorerІ integrates both shell column handlers available in windows explorer (e.g. file comments) plus it offers many useful columns of its own e.g. for file checksums. You can arrange files using more than one column at a time (multi-way sort), which is a must for large file collections.
Whatever you see in xplorerІ can be extracted as text for printing or other book-keeping and report generation.

We are particularly proud of Omni-finder, the search engine within xplorerІ. Not only will it search for the usual filenames, contained text etc, but it can use all pieces of file information xplorerІ can show in its detailed view as search rules. You can search within file comments, picture data, attributes, keywords, practically all shell column handlers supported by your windows OS. Filenames can be fuzzy and text searches support regular expressions.
The sample snapshot shows the results of a search that looked for text both inside files and matching some particular keywords. If you have a lot of files you'll appreciate the increased precision these extra search conditions allow you. The search results are shown in so called scrap containers, which act like virtual folders. Notice that the quickviewer shows the target text in all matching files. You can work with the search results straight away since scrap containers are fully fledged file managers. If an initial search has brought up too many results you can search locally (i.e. refine a previous search) for fewer, more relevant documents.

Windows explorer is notorious for leaving you in the cold whenever errors disrupt a large copy e.g. across the network. You are left wondering which files where copied and how to restore order.
xplorerІ takes the worry off your file copies with a range of useful options. You can have many parallel background transfers or queue them sequentially. There are several overwrite policies (confirm/rename/check dates), size management, and optional clearing of the read-only attribute when copying from CDs.
You can pause and resume transfers, even leave them completely unattended: no questions will be asked and any unexpected events or errors will be logged. This is ideal for network administrators performing routine backup operations.

xplorer² has many other extended file management commands, like file splitting/merging, a shredder, advanced NTFS awareness (hard links, folder junctions, ADS, file comments) and much more. These commands are also available in scrap containers so you can apply them on arbitrary file collections or recursively on subfolders.
At the same time it remains shell-friendly, seamlessly integrating with most namespace and other shell extensions. Exotic shell features like custom icon overlays (e.g. TortoiseSVN) are also supported.
Often we have to work on more than one computer, be it a laptop or remote FTP server. xplorer² can automatically detect files that have changed and need updating with a variety of criteria. It then marks the files that need transferring and awaits your further instructions, e.g. to copy or delete files.
xplorer² can also discover any duplicate files that may be taking up your valuable disk space. Using the ubiquitous scrap containers you can browse one or more folders flat (extracting all subfolders in a single view) and check for duplicates either by name or by content. The results will be grouped together for easy inspection.

Finally if you wonder where have all those gigabytes of hard disk space gone, xplorerІ can provide the answer calculating folder statistics, with detailed information like number of files and total size, per subfolder.
You can copy out this information as text, and paste it e.g. to Excel for printing or further manipulation.

Even in our present GUI age, you can't beat the argument passing flexibility of console programs. xplorerІ can invoke both DOS and windows programs to do all sorts of tasks e.g. comparisons, conversions, straight from the addressbar.

Using $-tokens representing the currently selected files you can create your own palette of reusable command templates and store them in a configurable user menu for future use. The output of commands is intercepted and shown in a user-friendly GUI console — no more struggling with DOS boxes!

You can also apply commands on many files at once using the script wizard or the mass renamer. Special $-tokens allow you to use any piece of column information as part of the renamed file, so for instance you can put ID3 tags in your filenames.

You can specify color coding rules for filetypes you want to stand out, for instance make all encrypted files blue or folder junctions black against red background.
xplorer² should be easy to work straight out of the box but for those of you who want fine-tune minute details there are plenty of options to play with, from single-click activation to sound policies.
